As our Spanish Sanctuary renovation inches along with multiple rooms at various stages of completion, we’re adding a new project to the mix—another bedroom! This one has has been quite a fulfilling creative outlet for me over the last few weeks and I can’t wait to spill the details!

Before
We’re calling this the “twin bedroom”, and it’s one of two bedrooms with access to the jack & jill bathroom.

It’s a long, somewhat narrow room at 10’10” x 14’4″, and in true Florida builder-grade fashion, there’s an awkwardly sized corner window (fortunately I have tricks to help with that!)

Here’s the other side of the room, taken from the bathroom doorway:

Finally, we’ve got the typical closet setup, with the bathroom door on the left and the bedroom entrance on the right.

Progress
Over the last several months we’ve installed wood floors, skim coated the walls and ceiling, ran new electric and replaced the doors.

With the rough construction out of the way, it’s time to get to the good part!
The Inspo
Sometimes an entire design plan is inspired by one piece of furniture. In this case, it was a trundle bed that I couldn’t stop thinking about. This room will have two twin trundle beds to maximize occupancy, and as the most prominent pieces in the room, they have to be memorable.

Once black & white gingham was the theme, I quickly went down a rabbit hole of design inspo, and landed on a unique mashup of styles: Country Cottage meets Country Club.

Not wanting to risk the space feeling too child-like and old fashioned with the gingham beds, I decided to add in a healthy dose of sophistication: think dark wood accents, rich brown walls, florals paired with geometric patterns, woven textures like rattan, jute and linen. With a nod to heritage sports, it’s equal parts masculine and feminine, rustic yet refined.
The Design Plan
Here’s what I came up with…

We’ll continue the dark wood beams and stained pine doors throughout the house, and paint the walls a rich terracotta brown (inspired by the rug). The new Loloi x CLJ Rue rug is the second piece I fell in love with and couldn’t live without for this room.
Rattan sconces will provide task lighting above each bed, while twisted leg side tables allow for an easily-movable surface. Vintage equestrian art and tennis rackets add personality and drive the country club theme home. I haven’t landed on the exact pillow and curtain combo yet, but expect to see a mix of sage/muted greens, browns, burgundy and neutrals with varying textures.
I enlisted the help of AI to make a rendering with these design elements—these aren’t the exact products or placement, but it will give you a general sense of the vibe:

Layout
To get the proportions and placement right, I always map out the room in Illustrator before finalizing any product decisions. Here’s the overhead floor plan with everything shown to scale:

You know I love a good bunk bed situation, but trundle beds are nice for grown-ups because everyone gets their own easily accessible mattress (and it’s better for couples, too!) This configuration allows just enough space for both trundles to be in use at the same time, and there’s still room in the closet for suitcases and belongings.

I’m still finalizing a few last details, but here are the links to everything I’ve bought/plan to use in this space!
Designing this room felt a bit like planning our daughter’s big girl room. I’m always drawn to cottage style bedrooms and finding ways to keep it fresh and fun. I’m especially looking forward to color drenching the room in a moody brown—a first for me!
What do you think of the plan? Are you as excited as I am to watch this unfold??

Pretty. Love the gingham. Actually, I always like seeing your “cottage” inspired rooms, they are warm and inviting without being too cute or overwhelming. Double trendle beds = more people on beds. Much easier, but not quite as much fun, as built in bunk beds. Bonus- adults are perfectly happy on a trundle and folded up makes for great sitting.

Looking great! I would love to know the prompt that got you to that image from ChatGPT!

I actually used MidJourney!

So happy to hear that Karen! I hope the end result will be as good as the inspo 🙂

I was reading this on my phone. When I scrolled a bit I chucked it and went to bigger photos!
Absolutely love this. I can see some corduroy, maybe curtains.
Jenna Sue says
So happy you love it, too! Corduroy could be fun 😀

What a cool room! That size/shape of room is perfect for two trundle beds. That navy gingham also reads coastal to me, not juvenile at all. What will be in that big closet? Now that I’ve design and built new houses, I understand why builders mis-place windows. Sometimes it has to do with how they look on the exterior, or how they are placed to avoid extra structural engineering. I bet Florida engineering is extra tough, so windows end up where they end up in spec build houses. I know you will make it look good. This whole room idea is perfect, and a place I’d want all my kids to room together.
Jenna Sue says
Glad you like it, Julie! The beds are actually black and white 😉 The closet is a standard size, not walk-in. I think it may be a separate project down the road — for now I may just put the old doors back on and color drench with the wall/trim color (or maybe not, we’ll see!). And yes, the builders here always choose the path of least resistance/cost, no matter the visual consequence 😬

Can you ask AI what color brown they painted your room? Such a beautiful shade love everything that you’ve done in there.
Jenna Sue says
Thanks! I didn’t ask it use a specific color and wouldn’t trust it to be accurate. I’ll be testing actual samples soon!

I can’t wait to see it. I know it will be stunning like everything else you do. Which AI program do you use for rendering?
Jenna Sue says
Thanks April! I used MidJourney. Still very new at it and I couldn’t get it to do exactly what I wanted, but at least it’s something!
