As work slowly progresses on our major backyard renovation, we’re tackling the first room inside the home—the primary bedroom! Let’s take a look at how it started:
Before
This is the largest bedroom I’ve ever worked with, measuring 18’6” x 15’5” with a 9’4″ recessed tray ceiling.
It has three windows, and ample space for both a king bed plus twin trundle daybed for additional guests.
The entrance is like a mini foyer area, with double doors off the main hallway, a walk-in closet on one side and bathroom on the other.
Inspiration
Keeping in line with our Spanish Sanctuary vision, this bedroom will be a cozy haven filled with warm neutrals, patterned textiles, rich wood tones and organic textures.
My goal is to create a timeless and collected feel by incorporating secondhand, aged and vintage inspired pieces.
Design Plan
Here’s what I came up with!
And here’s the layout I landed on:
Let’s take a closer look at the details:
Walls & Floors
After sampling a handful of floors that fit my criteria (engineered wood, wide plank, matte and wire brushed finish, matching stair nose available) I’ve finally landed on one! Can you guess?
If you guessed the bottom right, you are correct! I chose the Element Flooring Sahara Gladiator European White Oak. It’s thicker than most of the other options, and I love the warmer mid-toned brown for a more traditional Spanish feel. We’ll install these floors throughout the house (except for the bathrooms and kitchen).
For the walls, I found this budget-friendly lime paint in the color Fossil. I love the subtle movement in this soft ivory beige tone. We’ve limewashed a bedroom before and I’m looking forward to trying out a new color!
One recent find I’m very excited about are these affordable pre-made beams. They’re constructed from real maple wood and include the mounting plate, so installation is simple and very doable for beginners. What really makes these a game changer is the price—they’re a fraction of the cost of any other pre-assembled beams I’ve come across.
We were prepared to make DIY box beams for every room but this will save us SO much time! We’ll stain them a dark brown, and plan to use them throughout the house.
Furnishings
The focal point of this room will be a California King four poster bed. Lucky for me, I snagged one on Facebook Marketplace for $180!
Unfortunately I’m not sure of the original source and couldn’t find a match online, but it is definitely secondhand with an old paint job. I’ll be repainting it black and potentially adding some sort of decorative trim in the headboard/footboard gaps. It feels very elegant and regal, don’t you think?
For the nightstands, I’m using our DIY Ikea Malm Hack chests that I adore so much.
The room is large enough to comfortably fit a twin trundle bed to sleep two additional guests, so I’ll place one on the wall opposite the bed. I have a very specific look in mind—curved back with a dark olive green linen fabric—and have not been able to find exactly what I want anywhere. The only thing that came close was the Carter daybed from West Elm in a dark green distressed velvet, but it’s a bit more than I was hoping to spend.
I’ve had no luck searching secondhand, and my only other option is to have a custom slipcover made in my fabric of choice, which may be tricky with the curved shape and trundle functionality. Or use fabric dye/paint, which I’m especially weary about for a rental. Stay tuned as this story continues to develop!
Textiles
I fell in love with the SaraLe x TwoPages curtain collaboration when it launched a while back, and was waiting for the perfect opportunity to use them. Here we are!
I’m going with the floral pattern in Scarlet, and will use three sets (one for each window). The background color is more of a khaki with olive undertones in person. How gorgeous will this deep red pattern look next to the burgundy-brown nightstands?
For the rug, I’m 99% sold on the Loloi x Amber Lewis Morgan in ink/sunset. It’s a super soft CloudPile with earthy neutrals and a subtle design that should play nicely with the curtains.
I also recently discovered these designer dupe floral pillows at an insane price, so I’ll probably grab a couple different colors.
Decor
The finishing touches will include these gorgeous wall sconces (above the daybed, flanking the TV), a minimalist citrus tree in this oversized terracotta planter, a pretty side table, ceiling fan, lamps, artwork and wall mirror (TBD). Most things haven’t been purchased yet so there’s still time to make adjustments!
Shop the room
You can click or tap on the items below to shop each one. The bed is not the one I have, but the closest I could find online.
Over the last few weeks, Lucas has made progress getting the room prepped for limewash. The carpet has been removed, ceiling lights relocated, ceiling skim coated, wall sconces added and walls patched. We are taking some family time off before school starts in August, but as soon as we return—it’s game on!
See ya in a few weeks,

Excited to follow your progress as always!!!
Going to be gorgeous! 💜

I think it all looks lovely and I love that green daybed! What colour did you want it to be? I think green would still look good in that room, especially if you have a mix of those cushions in the brown and green colours. I don’t know what the price is as Westelm won’t open up for people outside of the USA (it’s most annoying as I see links to this a lot!).
Jenna Sue says
The green is exactly what I want! I just don’t love the price 😉 It’s around $1800 USD.

Hey! Quick question how are going to do the wood beams with thee recess ceilings? We have also a massive master bedroom, with recess ceilings. I never thought of doing wood beams in there, just curious?! I loveeee your style and this room looks like it’s going to be amazing!!
Jenna Sue says
We’ll add the beams inside of the recessed area, just like we did with the bedrooms in our last house! You can see how we did it in this post: https://www.jennasuedesign.com/how-to-build-box-beams/

Oooh love your inspirations- it’s going to be gorgeous.
JS – quick question though: when I clicked on the link for the wood flooring it took me to a much lighter wood than what you showed on lower right. Is that correct? Sarah Gladiator European White Oak – ? I guessed right that you’d choose that, but the link looks SO much lighter than in your picture. I am trying to find a floor for my sister and the one you chose looks perfect – a little worried that there may be a mistake in the link there.
Jenna Sue says
Yes, that is the correct link! It does look a bit lighter on screen, but this flooring has some variation so maybe I received one of the darker sections. I find that they do tend to look a bit different (usually lighter) online. It’s not too dark in person but a nice medium tone.

I hope you find the day bed you’re looking for. That’s going to be a beautiful cozy room.

Gonna be pretty! Love the paint. I would be wary of a dyed fabric as well. Can’t wait to see the finished product.
