Crossing another room off our completed list today with one of my favorites—the primary bedroom! Let’s go back to the very beginning…
Jump to:
Before
It’s quite a spacious room, measuring 16’5″ x 16’10”.
There are french doors leading to the patio, an ensuite Mediterranean bathroom, and closet.
The only issue was this very off-center high window, which I had to find a creative solution for.
Inspiration
I wanted a cozy, calming and luxurious vacation feel for our guests, and found inspiration to help guide the design direction:
Progress
A focal ceiling was the first order of business. We squared off the tray ceiling and added DIY box beams, just like we did with the rest of the bedrooms.
To make this one extra special, I decided to fill in the recessed area with dark bamboo fencing. The slats were installed individually, and sit inside a channel between the top of the beam and the ceiling.
Next, we had to address that awkward window. I decided to go ahead and cover it up entirely with a floor to ceiling headboard. The room already has natural light thanks to the french doors, so the window wouldn’t be missed.
We gave it the same Venetian Plaster treatment as our living room fireplace (the photo above shows after two coats but a third was needed to even it out).
Next, Lucas built a custom king sized bed frame with two pull-out twin trundle beds. We needed this room to sleep four guests, and after going through many configurations, decided that this approach made the most sense.
Finally, a canopy hanger was made from wood rods, ceiling brackets and corner connectors (stained and painted dark brown to blend in with the ceiling).
Reveal
Step inside our Bali bedroom suite…
I don’t know about you, but this is the room I’d want to sleep in on vacation…
The gauze fabric was purchased by the foot, cut down and rod pockets iron-hemmed. It’s the same fabric I used for our Tropical Oasis primary bedroom a few years ago.
I found this cool handmade Moroccan bench on Etsy thought it was too good to be true at that price. The leather was a different color than advertised, but it’s still beautiful and an amazing value. The palm fiber pendant lights are also handmade from Morocco, and I scored them on sale for just $36.
I waited patiently and snagged both the arched mirror and tapestry on sale—both great deals even without the price drops!
The Loloi/CLJ Jules rug looks great in just about any room, and it’s on sale right now (this is the 8’6″x11’6″). Noticing a theme here? Everything is budget-friendly! 😉
Love this peek-a-boo view from the primary bathroom.
Here’s a view of the trundle beds set up, and the view from the other side of the room:
Not too bad for a DIY renovation on a budget, right? I hope our guests never want to leave!

This is absolutely stunning and so inspiring! Would you share what you replaced the doors with? There’s a peek of either the bathroom or closet door with like a vertical slat design that is much more interesting than the standard doors from the before pictures! All of this is just gorgeous!!

Thanks Colette! You can find the door tutorial here: https://www.jennasuedesign.com/diy-plank-door-makeover/

Oh my word, what a transformation. You’d never believe the “just fine room before” turned into this incredibly moody vacation bedroom. It is absolutely fabulous and you are a truly gifted designer. Any post from you makes me go make a cuppa and sit and drool and wish and dream for the longest time. You are by far my most fav and you should have a tv show. Seriously. If you ever publish books I will be your first buyer of them! This room is incredibly perfect. And your genius in just covering up that odd window – I mean never in a million years would I have thought of that – and the placement of the bed now, and how it looks is PERFECT!

I love this room! It’s so beautiful!!
Karen says
This is absolutely gorgeous! I love the ceiling! Do you think this would work in a room with 8 foot ceilings or would it make the room seem small and dark?
I love the trundle beds and the canopy too! Gorgeous!
Jenna Sue says
Thank you Karen! Absolutely, I would do the same treatment with 8′ ceilings. Feature ceilings actually draw your eyes up and make the room feel larger in my experience. Go for it!

You are too kind Tracy! Thank you and happy holidays to you as well.
